I can’t help but disagree when girls complain about the high volume of female cherubs compared to the small number of male cherubs. I go to an all girls school. At my school, it’s a rarity to see a boy coming down the hallway, an occurrence that may happen only once or twice a day.
The last time I went to school with boys was eighth grade, so I honestly didn’t know what classes here would be like with a male influence. Turns out boys have moved on from fart and burp jokes (at least a majority of them) to material that’s fairly entertaining. Mitch Steinfeld, for example, entertains us daily with wacky glitter bow ties and the fedora he wears on all occasions.
There are positives and negatives to working with boys. Positive: when one helps you out with your trend story by meticulously editing it. Negative: when they interrupt a workshop to make fun of Arnold Schwarzenneger.
Going to an all girls school has unique advantages. I don’t need to fret about makeup all the time, I don’t really care what shape my uniform is in, and my trademark hairstyle is the messy ponytail. I admit, during the first two weeks at cherubs I felt the need to impress boys with my appearance. However, journalism became my number one priority after immersing myself in the program. I instead opted for running shorts and T-shirts.
One main reason used to defend single-sex schools is that the presence of the opposite sex serves as a major distraction for students. I don’t see it that way. Yes, I think some of the boys are attractive here, but they’re not the reason I came to cherubs. Journalism is why I came to cherubs.
Boys have a lot to contribute to the classroom, something I often miss at school. They give a different perspective to the way we look at life. They’re crazy, they’re annoying, but they’re also helpful, sweet and caring. Boys calm you down when you’re frantic about deadlines.
There are not as many differences between males and females as we may have originally thought. In journalism they tell you to get both sides of the story: this can only be obtained with working with both sexes.
