“Dinner is pretty early here; you’re guaranteed to be done eating by 6:30,” said Shapiro, a cherub from Dexter, Mich. “By night time, it feels like part of me is missing.
This is where the late-night snack delivery comes in.
Shapiro was one of many cherubs to employ Community Associate Kristin Ellertson as a deliverer of food, sending her to pick up delivered pizza or Burger King during floor time.
“She definitely came through for us on many occasions,” Shapiro said. “Although we did have to tip her to give her an incentive.
Ellertson didn’t mind going out of her way to get food and said that being tipped was just an added bonus.
“I can tell when they’re hungry,” Ellertson said. “With the food at Hinman, I can see how it’s difficult to maintain a full stomach and I sympathize with them. I’m always happy to deliver food to them, as long as they stay quiet.”
Other students thought ahead and loaded up on snacks during the day so that they were prepared. Cattie Rolfe, a cherub from Winnetka, Ill., routinely bought cereal, popcorn and Diet Coke from nearby stores and snacked on them at her convenience.
“At times, I thought I would die of hunger if I didn’t have snack food in my room,” said Rolfe, who also saves leftover pizza in the fridge. “And if I ever skip breakfast to sleep, I could just bring cereal to the lectures. It really came in handy.”
Justin Schecker, a cherub from Silver Spring, Md., loaded up on snacks at Target before he came to camp, preparing for the empty stomachs he knew were inevitable. Schecker purchased a 28-pack of water, a 24-pack of Cheez-Its, two boxes of granola bars, a box of Life Cereal and a box of Oreos. He said he was very pleased with his foresight.
“I have needed the food more then I thought I would,” Schecker said. “Everyone is envious of the stash I brought. I’ve made friends because of my collection.”
Unlike Schecker, Shapiro didn’t plan ahead. But, thanks to Ellertson, he is still able to find sustenance. Freshly equipped with chicken nuggets and a vanilla milkshake, he has successfully put his hunger at bay.
