Dancing in the dorms

Cherubs use music to set the tone for the summer

His foot begins to tap as *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” blasts from iPod speakers set up in the corner of the room. Jeff Scholl, a cherub from Bethesda, Md., drops the poker chips he has been stacking and jumps up, flawlessly executing every dance move the boy band does in their music video. The deafening chatter of the nearly 40 cherubs in the room dies, and everyone turns to look at him.

“It was breathtaking,” said Ivana Dukanovic, a cherub from Los Altos, Calif.

Spectators weren’t the only ones who enjoyed Scholl’s performance.

“I had many a good night listening to classic *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys songs,” Scholl said. “It gave me a good opportunity to let loose and bust out some dance moves. It made people realize that I have a fun side and that I’m unpredictable.”

Cherubs often used music to come together. Almost every dorm room had at least one set of iPod speakers so music was a constant presence at the program.

“When people like Jeff bust out, go for it and don’t care, it brings all of the cherubs together,” Dukanovic said. “We all come from different places but through music, whether it’s rap, country, or rock and roll, we can relate to each other. It’s the easiest way to express ourselves and be outgoing.”

Cherubs also used music to have impromptu dance parties, help them focus when writing stories and to motivate them while they exercised, said Alli Hoff, a cherub from Emmaus, Pa. and Esther Zuckerman, a cherub from Encino, Calif. Throughout all of these activities, cherubs’ music taste was very eclectic. Songs from musical such as “Grease,” “Hairspray” and “The Fiddler on the Roof” were very popular, said Marissa Mumford, a cherub from Westfield, N.J. However, cherubs still listened to contemporary music such as DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Over” and Rihanna and Jay-Z’s “Umbrella.”

No matter what their music taste is, Dukanovic said that cherubs were able to bond and relate through music.

“Music is the catalyst to cherub memories,” she said.

Erika Mahoney, Megan McGee, Charesse James, Asia Mayfield, and Elise Brown dance to music.

Justin Schecker and Jazz White boogie while Ally Bain looks on.
