Alexa Fogler, a cherub from Cincinnati, was ready for a day at the beach when a lifeguard halted her and asked if she had a beach token.
“What the heck is a beach token?” Fogler asked. “I was really disappointed that I couldn’t go into the water at the beach by the lakefill. I decided to stay, but I could only sit on the sand by the boats.”
Fogler was one of the many cherubs who headed to the beach to relax after a long week of classes and lectures. Fogler soon learned that tokens cost $8, admitted one person to the beach and could be bought at the beach’s entrance. The questions became, “What beach is free?” and “Where can I get into the water?”
Fogler soon learned about two beaches on Northwestern’s campus, the beach by the lakefill and the beach by the Sports Pavillion and Aquatics Center, or SPAC.
“The SPAC beach was so nice, when I rounded the corner, I was so excited to be there,” said Elizabeth Rowe, a cherub from Lake Forest, Ill.
The beach adjacent to SPAC is free for any student who carries a Wildcard.
“Just flash them the purple card, and you’re good,” Fogler said. “It was really nice. It took two beach trips to figure it out, but it was worth it.”
