Shedding pounds on campus, around town

Feeling guilty about late night pizza? Fro yo got you down?

Frozen yogurt drizzled with caramel. Pepperoni pizza. Popcorn. Potato chips. Soda. Birthday cake. Lots and lots of birthday cake.

Cherubs ate it all.

Cherubs participate in a game of basketball at SPAC.

To avoid a summer preview of the “freshman 15,” cherubs had to find exercising opportunities on Northwestern’s campus.

“I want to stay in shape and be on top of my game once I get home,” said soccer player Katherine Perry, a cherub from Santa Barbara, Calif.

To stay in shape, Perry began her days with a morning run around the lakefill. She rolled out of bed at 6:45 a.m., just as the sun began to rise over Lake Michigan. Of course, exercise doesn't always require waking up at the crack of dawn. Cherubs can exercise during the day both on and off campus.

Lisa Silverman, cherub from Ellicott, Md., hit the gym at LA Fitness on Church Street, where a one-month membership can cost $80. For Silverman, the gym’s proximity to Fisk was worth the money.

“Going to the gym brought me closer to the community,” Silverman said. “It gave me and Evanston residents common ground when I needed to interview them for the high-rise paper.”

On campus, students can exercise at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center, known by wildcats as SPAC, is Northwestern’s fitness center. With six indoor tennis courts, an 18-lane pool and full Olympic weight room, SPAC is fully equipped for sports varying from basketball to squash.

Monthly membership for cherubs runs about $65, and a day pass costs $10.
