Joyful at Joy Yee

Local Pan-Asian restaurant captures hearts, stomachs

You turn west onto Davis Street from Hinman Avenue, and it starts to hit you. With sweaty palms and shortening breaths, you pass a string of tables on the sidewalk. Soon, you pass the plastic food displayed in the windows. And then you hit the restaurant’s doors. You enter and a deluge of dynamic scents engulfs you.

Welcome to Joy Yee’s Noodles.

Cherubs fill at least half of Joy Yee's Noodles on a typical Friday night.

Joy Yee’s Noodles, 521 Davis St., combines various traditional and innovative Pan-Asian cuisine to create one of Evanston’s most comprehensive menus. At Joy Yee’s there are over 350 dishes and drinks to choose from, ranging from $3.50 tapioca freezes to $17 high-end seafood dishes such as red snapper. With heaping helpings of food, sharing with friends is a must.

To experience Joy Yee’s firsthand is the only way to truly appreciate it, but below is a Cherub-style menu that captures the restaurant’s highlights:

Sesame Chicken - $9.95
“Sesame is the cornerstone of every good Joy Yee’s meal. It’s best to eat it fresh and at the restaurant, where the steamy goodness emanates from the chicken. When they bring it out hot from the kitchen, it’s a heavenly experience.” – Alex Katz, Boston

Black Pepper Beef - $8.95
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever eaten. It’s amazing, spectacular.” – Ross Lipschultz, Los Angeles

Combination Fried Rice - $6.95
“It’s the best of all worlds. The shrimp, the chicken, the beef’s like a medley of meat in my mouth. It’s fantastic.” – Jeff Scholl, Bethesda, Md.

Pineapple Chicken & Shrimp Fried Rice - $7.50
“It’s inside of a pineapple! It’s just splendid because of the display. Seven bucks for a pineapple, chicken, rice and shrimp. It’s out of this world. The flavor explodes in your mouth.” – David Tintner, Cooper City, Fla.

Peach Mango Tapioca Freeze - $3.50
“It has the refreshment of the peach, the surprising tropical flavor of the mango and the unique taste of the tapioca balls.” – Gabriel Debenedetti, Princeton, N.J.

Joy Yee stays with you long after leaving the restaurant. Countless aromas saturate your clothes and linger for hours, even days. Showering after a Joy Yee’s meal is a must, especially if you hang with those unappreciative of your odor.

Saving their customers the trouble of bathing, Joy Yee’s also delivers. Nothing is more rewarding than walking back from the entrance of Jones Hall with food in your hand, smiling proudly as others gaze with jealousy and stare.

Delivery orders can also be placed online at http://www.joyyee.com.

Joy Yee’s is open seven days a week. Operating hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekend.
