Cherubs go wireless
By Ali Elkin
Among the important decisions a cherub will make in the course of his or her lifetime, such as what college to attend and whom to marry, whether or not to bring a laptop to National High School Institute is surely one of the most critical.
Since cherubs are not part of the Northwestern wireless network, there is no Internet access in the dorms. Still, many cherubs choose to bring their laptops to the program and frequent the plethora of locations in Evanston that offer free wireless internet.
Katie Tang, 17, of East Amherst, N.Y., is an avid hotspot user. She found the wireless Internet in downtown Evanston particularly useful during the two weeks when she worked on her trend story.
“When we had the trend story breaks, I went straight to Panera instead of Fisk because I felt more comfortable there,” Tang said.
Katie Sanders, 17, of Newton, Mass., said she felt similarly. She appreciated the ability to access the Internet in places other than Fisk Hall.
“I liked being able to have my own Internet outlet and being able to work,” she said.
Sanders cited several locations in Evanston where wireless Internet is available, including Panera Bread, Kafein, Burger King and Cosi.
“At Starbucks, I hear you have to pay, so I don’t go there,” Sanders said.
Sanders found her go-to hotspot at Kafein, a small café with couches and unconventional décor. The free wireless was as much a draw for Sanders as Kafein’s tall frozen beverages.
“I can just sit and enjoy a chocolate milkshake and surf the web,” Sanders said.
